Fashion Blogger to Watch Out For: Wicked Ying
Normally, when I feature someone, I use their real names. But upon observation, I noticed that Mariel prefers to be called Wicked Ying. So today, I am making an exception and I’m going to use her well known user name. After all, featuring her here is a very huge honor for me.
You know how when you watch a movie or television show, you see a celebrity or a model and you say, “I want to be just like her when I grow up”? To me, that celebrity, is Wicked.
And no, I don’t say that just to kiss ass, I have so many valid reasons on why she is my style inspiration. Who wouldn’t want to have her gorgeous face, fair complexion, super long, wavy hair, naturally slim body, legs that go for miles as it appears in photos, and most of all, her fierce sense of style.
Everybody who knows Wicked Ying also knows that she is very fashion forward. Although, what I really applaud about her style is her ability to not go over the top and yet, still make heads turn. If I could, I would dub her as the Rumi Neely of the Philippines. Simply breath taking!
I found her site in Stephany Dy’s tumblr, since then, I never regretted clicking that link. Even though I have not been following her for very long, she already climbed her way up to the top of my “inspiring people” list. But I never expected that she would actually be the one to follow me on twitter and add me up on facebook! We even exchange tweets often, mostly about shoes (another reason why I adore her so much. Have you seen her shoe collection? It’s insane!) That is what I admire most about her, she is very humble and amiable in real life, true to her tag line “The Wicked Witch You Could be Friends With”. Despite everything that she’s achieved, she manages to keep her feet on the ground. If a lot of bloggers are like her, the (blogging) world would be a better place.
An Interview With Wicked Ying:
Who is Wicked Ying and where can we find her?
—My real name’s Mariel but I prefer to be called Wicked Ying in the internet world. I’m a 21 year old registered nurse (but not practicing) from Butuan City. I am an introvert who prefers to stay home and bask in the cyberspace than going out.
So who’s Wicked? She’s a self-confessed social media junkie, a chronic shoe addict, and a wicked witch who has a radical point of view in life.
The places where you can find me, just to name a few are below:
What can we expect to see in your blog?
—I started my blog around January, and then I bought my own domain/webhosting at around March. Since then, my blog has become my personal online diary. You could see me sharing my outfit posts, newly bought stuff/hauls, what I did that day, my take on photography, basically anything and everything that I do and would do. I do not constrain it into being labelled solely as a fashion blog because my topics of interest vary from fashion, social media, internet, opinions and reviews about what’s what.
How is your blog different from other fashion blogs?
—To start with, I see my blog as “just another fashion blog”. I make my approach as personal as possible; it’s a way of connecting with my readers. I don’t strive for it to be famous or something to that extent, I’m just getting by it day after day.
What sets me apart from other blogs? Prolly nothing! As in nada! However, I could say the only thing that makes it different is my quest to complete this certain 365 Looks challenge wherein I post a look each day. It’s my own way of keeping my site loaded with new content. Thus, it’s guaranteed fresh daily! Haha!
Describe your sense of style:
—I say no to anything tacky or trashy. Haha! For me, there’s no definite description when it comes to one’s sense of style. I think it’s forever evolving and in a constant progress. Therefore I cannot merely say that I’m this or that. When it comes to choices though, I usually rely on the basics, match it up and then go. Most of the time, I’m in a casual laidback outfit that involves tank tops, denim shorts, and flats. I lean towards the edgy side of dressing up, I’m a male wannabe way back then. My other quirky side’s expressed thru my outfit posts. And another thing, I’m afraid of colors! :p
When did your love for fashion start? When did you start dressing up?
—I could not really tell when it started but then, I can still remember those stilettos my mother owned that I used to sneak in and wear. I believe every girl has been at that stage, where you fancy yourself, play dress up, and mimic whoever it is that you idolize that time.
When it comes to dressing up, the whole thing kind of spurted out of nowhere. Right after I finished school, I felt a sudden sense of freedom. No dress codes, no uniforms, no “bawal”. I became motivated to try on the things that I’ve been restricted from like nail polish, shorts, etc. These things used to be bawal in school right?! Moreover, I’m lucky that my boyfie supports me into these kinds of thing unlike the usual scenario wherein the guys prohibit you from wearing this and that.
Where do you usually shop? Can you recommend an online shop for us?
—I’m a big sucker for ukay ukay. Most often than not, I spend my free days scouring the city for some good finds. A thousand bucks could save me a month worth of outfits. Haha! Department stores are my fave too. I guess I’m a cheapo when it comes to clothing. I’m being practical, and I want to show girls out there that you don’t need expensive clothes to look great.
And when it comes to online shops, I shop randomly and you would notice that on my outfit details in each blog post. You could follow the links if you like. I’m a suki at Steph’s shop too, PINKaholic. I never miss out a collection ever since I started buying there.
Who are your fashion inspirations?
—Having worked for a beauty/fashion website before, I discovered Lookbook.nu and some other fashion blogs. It inspired me to get a slice of the fashion life. From then, I was compelled to sign up and join the craze! Lookbook.nu influenced me greatly because it showcases real people in real clothing.
Rumi Neely, Lina Tesch, Alison Mosshart and Charlotte Free are my icons. They may not all be in the fashion industry specifically but I still like the way they dress up and the “I don’t care, I don’t give a damn” attitude they exude.
What are other fashion blogs that you follow?
What are your body insecurities and how do you deal with them?
—Everyone has to deal with some body issues and I’m no exception. I could even talk about this all day as it is quite a long list. Hehe!
Bad skin – I ain’t flawless especially with the face part – solution? BB creams and concealers! ;)
My bilbil and hips – It’s quite out of proportion so I stick with wearing highwaist shorts. It hides that part well!
Uber small feet – I’m a size 5. Most often than not, shoes that I order are a tad bigger. Solution? Corks at insoles!
Small arms and fingers – That’s why you rarely see me wearing accessories like bangles and rings. They just don’t fit!
My height and build– Too short, too petite!
What can you advice girls who want to express themselves through fashion but are embarrassed to do so?
—I think I’m the one who needs advice on that area! Haha!
I love fashion but I don’t wear what I post every single day. I feel timid at times. However, that doesn’t stop me from expressing myself thru the clothes I wear and blogging about it. Fashion is fun and should be fun. If you’re not comfortable with what you’re wearing then don’t. It’s that simple!
